⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ REVIEW: Angel of Death by S. Massery

High intensity with a gripping storyline and compelling romance, this book definitely holds your attention. When I read the first book in the series (helpful, but not required for reading this one), I was drawn in from the beginning. The writing is great, with complex characters who straddle the line between right and wrong. Ultimately, I thought the romance in the first book felt rushed, but that is not the case here. I was intrigued by the connection between Griffin and Hadley from the start, and the tension between them as the story unraveled made for a great read.

The story follows Hadley, a woman who has had a guardian angel of sorts for most of her life. She met Griffin when she was a kid, and they bonded deeply during that time. Though he hasn’t been a permanent fixture in her life for years now, he’s always seemed to show up when she needs him. Their connection runs deep, but a 5 year absence has changed the dynamics of their relationship. The last few years haven’t been easy on Hadley, and now she knows she can no longer depend on Griffin. Griffin’s taken their connection for granted, assuming that he can just show up at her door and pick up where they left off. But he’s not the same guy she once loved, and his visit has brought danger to her. As they come together, they realize just how many secrets they’ve kept from each other over the last few years.

I am so glad that I decided to continue on with this series. The first book definitely had me torn, but I absolutely loved the author’s writing style and saw promise in the other characters so I thought I’d give this one a try. I was in no way disappointed. Angel of Death held my attention from the first page and didn’t let up as the story flew by. Griffin is a really great character – he’s a man who heals as much as he kills, and he is as warm with Hadley as he is cold with others. A man of many contrasts, he won me over almost immediately and I was surprised by just how much I connected to him. Hadley’s a solid character too – she comes off as young and naive at times, but she also has great strength. The connection between them was so interesting to read. My only real complaint would be that there is so much focus on the suspense that it takes away from the romantic dynamic between these two. It’s worth mentioning that there are plenty of triggers in this book – not only is there a lot of bloodshed (a LOT), but cancer is also involved in a big way. Keep that in mind while deciding if this is the book for you. I’m looking forward to seeing what’s next with this series. Though this can be read as a standalone, the overarching storyline bridges the books and makes it difficult not to want to continue on to see what’s next. I received a free copy of this book via Booksprout and am voluntarily leaving a review.

When he returns, it’s like a dream.
But it quickly dissolves into a nightmare.

People are after him—and by proxy, me.

But now we’re in too deep, and I can’t warn him—

Is me.
