⭐️⭐️ So very disappointing

Never Got Over You

Oh my God, this book is FRUSTRATING. It’s a second chance/enemies to lovers romance that skips over all the happy parts. The writing itself is actually very good so it drew me in, but every time I thought “this is it, they’re finally going to work things out,” it just never happened.

The story follows James, the new CEO of a coffee company who is known for his irrational firing of employees. He kinda acts like a petty a-hole/whiny baby, which was fun to read at first but grew old quickly. He once loved Kate and has never truly moved on, being emotionally unavailable and focusing on work. After a firing spree leaves him seeking new employees, Kate gets hired by the company against his wishes. He’s bitter because she agreed to wait for him when he “went off to school” but she married another man while he was away. Tensions rise as they are forced to work together, and it becomes apparent that there are still lingering feelings between them.

When I started reading this book, I really thought it was going to be in 4 or 5 star range because of the writing style. But somewhere along the way, things went off the rails for me. These two don’t even come face to face until a third of the way into the book, and once they do, there are zero tender scenes between them (though that doesn’t mean they don’t have some hate sex). This is one of those cases when everything could’ve been solved with a simple conversation, but they NEVER TALK. Also, I’m not convinced that things were great enough between them initially to warrant them still being in love 10 years later – there were lies and miscommunications even then. All in all, it was wholly disappointing to discover that this enemies to lovers romance never truly left enemies territory.
