⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ Sometimes I wasn’t sure I loved it… but I was hooked

In the Unlikely Event

HOLY CRAP… talk about unexpected. I knew going in that this would be unlike anything I’ve read by L.J. Shen before, but it threw me for a total loop and I wasn’t always sure if I loved that or hated it. Exquisitely written, intriguing, and utterly unique, it’s a romance unlike any I have read. I was hooked from the very beginning and that did not change at all along the way. It’s an emotional rollercoaster that mixes flashbacks with present day, showing just how much these two – and their relationship – have changed over the years.

I’ll be intentionally vague here in describing the story, because you’re going to want to go along with the journey as it unfolds. I can guarantee you’re not going to expect all the twists and turns it makes along the way. Basically, Mal and Rory met 8 years ago when they were both young, and their time together made a huge impression. They made an agreement in the unlikely event that they met again that they would be together, but when they do finally run into each other again, so much time has passed that it seems ludicrous to follow through on that. They’ve both changed, and though Rory has moved on with her life in some ways, she’s always got their time together in the back of her mind.

I openly admit that I had high expectations for this book. I don’t read every L.J. Shen book as soon as it’s released, but this one caught my attention and resonated with me. After reading it… it’s so not what I expected. Did I love absolutely everything about the book? Honestly, no. Was I riveted the whole time and wanting to see what happened next? Absolutely. It’s certainly not a book I will forget anytime soon. The writing is fantastic, drawing you in and making you root for these two… even when you might not really want to. It’s complex, emotional, angsty, and so unlike anything I’ve read before.
