⭐️⭐️⭐️ 5-star banter, 3-star hero

Booty and the Beast

From the moment Nick and Charisma lay eyes on each other in this steamy, intense romantic comedy, the chemistry was there. The opening scene is straight up FANTASTIC with some of the best banter I’ve read. Nick puts his foot in his mouth in a BIG way and it was so fun to read. But it also paints the picture of who our hero is deep down – a cocky, over the top dog whose singleminded pursuit of his dream is only interrupted by his desire to get Charisma into his bed. It started out so promising, and I really thought there was an opportunity for serious personal growth from Nick, but he doesn’t change much along the way. That paired with my lack of respect for Charisma falling for Nick’s charms before he redeemed himself for his past mistakes, and this promising romance ultimately felt unsatisfying to me.

The story follows Charisma, a former “big girl” who has made some huge changes in her life, getting in shape and becoming the nutritionist for a pro football team. High school was not a happy time in her life, and it was made worse by Nick, a superstar who broke her trust the same day he broke her heart. Six years later, and Nick’s best years are behind him, but he’s still fighting tooth and nail for his dream of becoming a pro football player… and he intends to enlist Charisma’s help in obtaining that goal. Charisma is equal parts drawn in and repulsed by Nick, but she finds herself letting him in, and what follows is the intricate dance of love/hate between these two.

I will say that Sosie Frost’s writing style is utterly unique and so easy to read. I really loved the start of the book – the chemistry was sizzling and the banter drew me in. Unfortunately, it sort of never moved past that. These two have a volatile relationship throughout the book – even the sex scenes are super intense (and don’t even get me started on that carrot). I wanted some more tenderness, some moments where they weren’t just feuding and something that showed why Charisma would be so willing to forgive Nick for their past. He is so over the top in his pursuit of getting her into bed that it was kind of exhausting after a while. I loved the back and forth, but needed it to be more than that at some point. What started as an easy 5-star rating for me ended up somewhere between a 3 and a 4. It’s certainly not bad, but I wanted more from it. I received a free copy of this book via Booksprout (and purchased it for my collection) and am voluntarily leaving a review.
