⭐️⭐️⭐️ Powerful but oh so problematic

I don’t even know what to say about this – there were parts that are undeniably 5-star worthy, and then there are parts that I found completely, COMPLETELY unacceptable in a romance. It will make an impact on you one way or another, and is not a book that’s easily forgotten. L.J. Shen is a master of her craft, having written many powerful, complex, and compelling books in the past – but this crossed too many lines for me. I can appreciate the quality of the writing, but I cannot recommend it as an exemplar “romance.” And please, please make sure you realize just how many TRIGGERS are in this before choosing to read – it is not a story that’s going to work for everyone (and no, it’s not the triggers that I had a problem with).

This isn’t really the kind of book where you want me to give you a lot of storyline details, so I’m not going to go into all that. Essentially, it’s a DARK bully romance where the relationship between our couple straddles that fine line of love and hate. The hero is as much victim as he is villain, and the heroine is strong enough to handle him. Do I think it’s a healthy relationship? Not at all. Do I think it’s a compelling one? Absolutely. There are a few scenes in here that would make even the biggest L.J. Shen fan consider putting the book down and walking away. I read parts of it word for word and skimmed others, but felt the need to stay til the very end.

Is this the kind of book that’s going to make me one-click Shen’s next release? No, not really. Am I completely done with her? No, the quality is still there – even when she swings and misses, it’s much more entertaining to read than many other authors out there. But this was all sorts of problematic for me.

“Buckle up and enjoy the ride, because you’re not coming out the same way you went in. A top 2020 read hands down.” –Helena Hunting, New York Times bestselling author

Angry God, an all-new emotional standalone about first love, second chances, and overcoming breathtaking losses at a young age from USA Today bestselling author L.J. Shen, is available now!

Vaughn Spencer.

They call him an angry god.

To me, he is nothing but a heartless prince.

His parents rule this town, its police, every citizen and boutique on Main Street.

All I own is a nice, juicy grudge against him for that time he almost killed me.

Between hooking up with a different girl every weekend, breaking hearts, noses and rules, Vaughn also finds the time to bully little ole’ me.

I fight back, tooth and nail, never expecting him to chase me across the ocean after we graduate high school.

But here he is, living with me in a dark, looming castle on the outskirts of London.

A fellow intern. A prodigal sculptor. A bloody genius.

They say this place is haunted, and it is.

Carlisle Castle hides two of our most awful secrets.

Vaughn thinks he can kill the ghosts of his past, but what he doesn’t know? It’s my heart he’s slaying.

Angry God is a stand-alone, DARK High School Romance. It deals with sensitive subjects some may find triggering.
