I’m picky about my second chance romances, there’s no denying that. The circumstances have to be juuuuust right or I get pulled out of the story, no matter how good the writing is – and Lauren Blakely’s writing is always great. Unfortunately, I just couldn’t get into this one, and my problem was the hero (more on that in a minute). It’s still got the banter and chemistry Blakely has perfected, as well as a fun scavenger hunt and some sweet letters, but I never connected to the couple (especially our hero), and that took some of the fun out of it.

The story follows Hunter and Presley, two people who shared a perfect 6 months together. They knew their time together was temporary but let things get too deep, so Hunter broke Presley’s heart when he ended things and took a mysterious job. Ten years later, Hunter has become famous for his adventures, and he hasn’t stopped to think about the girl he let get away… until she comes back into his life. As Presley and Hunter work together, old sparks fly and they have to decide if they were ever really meant to be more than temporary.

I’m a big fan of Blakely’s writing, so there was a lot about this that I loved – the dialogue, the chemistry, the moments of sweetness – but every time I started to get into the story, Hunter would do something to pull me out of it. It felt like Hunter had his adventure with Presley and then just moved on to the next thing – it was really never a question that he would choose work over her. Hunter openly admits that he got over Presley within a few months, even saying that if he wanted to see her, he would’ve. It’s only because work brought them back together that anything changes. He felt cold and impersonal at times, which didn’t do anything to endear him to me. If you’re a fan of second chance romances, this one might work better for you, but it sits solidly between 3 and 4 stars for me. I received an ARC and am voluntarily leaving a review of this second chance romance.
