15 May Releases on My TBR

As April winds down, it’s time to start thinking about all of the great books that are releasing in May – and there are some AWESOME ones! With new announcements made every day, it’s almost impossible to keep track of all the romance novels on the horizon, so I’m sharing a list of 15 May releases that are on my TBR. My to-read pile will continue to grow, but these 15 books are at the top of the list.

A Secret for a Secret by Helena Hunting

I’ve got my ARC sitting on my Kindle, and it would’ve already been devoured if my husband wasn’t trapped in the house with me 24/7!!! The first two books in this series were EXCELLENT – A Favor for a Favor is one of my top reads of 2020 so far – so I can’t wait to start this one. It’s the kind of book that I know I’m going to want to read in one sitting, so as soon as I convince my husband to pretend I’m not home for a full afternoon, I’m going to get bingeing (quarantine problems, right?).

From New York Times bestselling author Helena Hunting comes a new romance about trading secrets, breaking the rules, and playing for keeps.

My name is Ryan Kingston, and I’m a rule follower. I’ve never been in a fistfight. I always obey the speed limit. I don’t get drunk, and I definitely don’t pick up random women at bars.

Except the night I found out that my whole existence has been a lie.

I got drunk. And picked up a stranger.

Her name was Queenie, and she was everything I’m not: reckless, impulsive, and chaotic. We did shots and traded secrets. And ended up naked at my place.

She left me a thank-you note in the morning and her panties as a parting gift. But no way to contact her.

Six weeks later I’m sitting in the first official team meeting of the season, and there she is. I neglected to mention that I’m the goalie for Seattle’s NHL team.

And Queenie? Turns out she’s the general manager’s daughter.

Love the One You Hate by R.S. Grey

R.S. Grey is one of my go-to rom com authors, and this release is an enemies to lovers romance so that alone moves it up the list! She’s great at writing light tension – as in, her books never get too angsty, but there’s still the conflict that I love about a good enemies to lovers romance. The cover reveal is coming very, very soon, and I can’t wait to see what it looks like!

Wylde by Sawyer Bennett

I am woefully behind on this series of sports romances, but the good thing is that they all stand alone. The blurb for this one has me all sorts of intrigued, and the covers from the series are so eye-catching! If I find myself in need of a good read, this is one series I’d love to get caught up on – but you can be sure that I’m reading Wylde ASAP!

There’s a reason they call me Wylde and it’s not just because it’s my last name. I might be one of the newest players on the Arizona Vengeance team, but I’m no stranger to the celebrity that goes along with being a professional hockey player. Whether it’s a fan seeking an autograph or a puck bunny looking for more, I’ve grown used to the attention. But when the beautiful and quirky redhead at the local bookstore doesn’t fall for my charms, I realize I’ll need to be a lot less Wylde and a lot more Aaron to capture her heart.

Ruthless Princess by Rachel Van Dyken

Confession time: though Rachel Van Dyken is one of my favorite authors, I’ve only read her contemporary romances. She’s also a prolific author of mafia romances, and this will be my first time reading one. Van Dyken always plays with themes of right/wrong and forbidden relationships, so I can only imagine what she weaves into her mafia romances. The start of a brand new series, Ruthless Princess seems like it’s going to be the perfect introduction to that side of her writing.

A mafia romance about best friends turned enemies by Rachel Van Dyken, the number one New York Times bestselling author of the Eagle Elite series.

The enemy of my enemy is my friend…
I never thought my father would ask this of me, to become the second generation at Eagle Elite University, to rule with an iron fist, and to take care of anyone who gets in our way.
But ever since the incident.
Ever since Him.
There’s been a war in our little clique.
After all, a house divided cannot stand.
He’s the problem, not me.
He used to kiss me like I was his oxygen.
Now he looks at me like I’m his poison.
But we both drank it, again and again, never believing there would be a day when our love would start a war.
And our friendship would shatter into a million pieces.
Then again, the worst thing you could do in the mafia is hang on to hope that your life will be normal.
The second worse thing?
Fall in love with your best friend.
And heir to the Nicolasi throne.

Jock Blocked by Pippa Grant

Pippa Grant’s books are always funny, sexy, fun reads, and we got a peek at the characters featured in Jock Blocked in her last book, Liar, Liar, Hearts on Fire. I’ve found myself loving sports romances even more than normal recently, so the combination of Pippa Grant and baseball seems… pretty awesome. I can’t wait to get my hands on this one.

She can’t let him score…

Call it superstition, but when a guy bats as hot as Brooks Elliott, you don’t mess with what’s working. And what’s working is him keeping his pants zipped and doing all of his scoring on the field.

So when I hear he’s planning to ditch his V-card now that he’s been traded to baseball’s lovable losers—aka my home team and my reason for living every March through October—I do what any rational, dedicated, obsessed fan would do.

I make a plan to stop him.

But the thing about stopping him is that it requires spending time with him.

Lots. And lots. And lots of time.

And the more time I spend with him, the more I like him. Not as the guy who’s going to help save my favorite team and finally bring home a championship ring, but as the guy who’s helping me in my quest to bring back the team’s old mascot. Who also loves making pancake and bacon sandwiches. And who would do almost anything for his love of the game.

But after all this time of jock-blocking him…do I even have a chance?

And if I do, are we both destined to a life of celibacy in the name of winning?

Jock Blocked is a home run of a romantic comedy featuring the world’s most superstitious sports fan, baseball’s oldest virgin hero, a rogue meatball, an adorable puppy with a cussing problem, and the best lovable losers. It stands alone and comes with a happily ever after more satisfying than a game-winning grand slam.

Queen Move by Kennedy Ryan

I’ve only read a little bit of Ryan’s work, but what I read was really good so I’m looking forward to checking out Queen Move. It sounds intriguing and that cover is gorgeous. She’s an intellectual author, so her books make you stop and think, which is perfect for an intense weekend read.

The boy who always felt like mine is now the man I can’t have…

Dig a little and you’ll find photos of me in the bathtub with Ezra Stern.
Get your mind out of the gutter. We were six months old.
Pry and one of us might confess we saved our first kiss for each other.
The most clumsy, wet, sloppy . . . spectacular thirty seconds of my adolescence.
Get into our business and you’ll see two families, closer than blood, torn apart in an instant.
Twenty years later, my “awkward duckling” best friend from childhood,
the boy no one noticed, is a man no one can ignore.

Finer. Fiercer. Smarter.

Tell me it’s wrong.
Tell me the boy who always felt like mine is now the man I can’t have.
When we find each other again, everything stands in our way–secrets, lies, promises.
But we didn’t come this far to give up now.
And I know just the move to make if I want to make him mine.

The Breakup Artist by Lila Monroe

Monroe writes light, fluffy rom com goodness – my go-to weekday reads. I’ve never read a book of hers that I haven’t liked, so I’m looking forward to The Breakup Artist. This relationship-centric series has interconnected characters but standalone stories, and I’m really curious to see how this one plays out.

I’m an expert in break-ups. From the slow fade, to extreme ghosting, to, ‘but you never said I couldn’t send pics of my junk to your step-sister on Instagram’ – I’ve seen it all… and built a mini-empire along the way. My blog, the Break-Up Artist, uses my past heartache to help people move on – and avoid weeping on the floor at 3am consuming their body weight in spray cheese and Oreos. Ahem.

Now, I have a new job that could mean the big-time: helping a famous Hollywood it-couple navigate their tricky break-up. Except not everyone wants them Splitsville. The movie studio needs to keep them together to promote their big movie, and they’ve sent someone to make sure I fail in my first VIP gig.

Wes Baxter. Also known as my ex.
Also ALSO known as, the guy who broke my heart so thoroughly, I had to turn myself into a self-help guru just to get over him.

I’m determined to follow my own advice (no drooling over Wes’s perfect abs, or remembering how he rocked my world) but being trapped together at a luxe country retreat isn’t helping things… And neither is Wes’s early-morning naked swim habit. Soon, love is in the air, the sparks between us are hotter than ever, and I’m seriously questioning my ‘no backsies’ policy.

Wes swears he’s changed. He wants to try again, and he’s got an annoyingly sexy way of convincing me. But can second chances really work? Or has the Break-Up Artist finally met her match?

The Two of Us by Kennedy Fox

I’ve been meaning to check out Kennedy Fox’s work, and this book seems like the perfect place to start. It’s one of the first books I’ve seen that includes a storyline that depicts the reality of quarantine life. I’m not sure that I’d love to read a book that embraces the heaviness of the situation, but this seems much more about the forced proximity, the tension of two opposites – and that’s something I absolutely want to read.

What do you do when the entire nation is on lockdown?

If you’re an heiress to a billion-dollar fashion company, then you quarantine in a glamorous cabin and finish your final semester of NYU online. The best way to focus on her upcoming valedictorian honor is away from her family, classmates, and the paparazzi. Cameron St. James is ready to get out of the big city and head Upstate for seclusion, despite her parent’s pleas to stay home.

What do you do when a pandemic is sweeping the world?

If you’re barely making ends meet, then you isolate yourself in your best friend’s mountain cabin with breathtaking views and no neighbors for miles. It’s the perfect safe place away from three roommates who don’t take the life-threatening epidemic seriously. Elijah Ross is ready to work remotely and focus on his next big promotion, assuming he’ll still have a job after this.

What happens when things don’t go as planned, and you’re stuck with the one person you dislike the most?

You improvise and do whatever it takes to avoid each other, though it proves to be impossible. The cold evenings alone turn into movie and popcorn nights together by the fireplace. Days turn into weeks, and eventually, more than just a friendship blossoms. As the unknown haunts them, they lean on one another for comfort—until someone pops their safety bubble and threatens everything.

The Two of Us is an enemies to lovers, brother’s best friend standalone romance set in the current affairs of history in the making. Though the character’s storyline is fiction, the virus is very real, and we’ve made sure to be sensitive on this topic.

The Rival Roomies by Piper Rayne

I’ve been enjoying this series of emotional rom coms so far, and the premise of The Rival Roomies has definitely caught my interest. It features the bad boy next door who has never showed any interest in his sweet and sexy neighbor… until another guy starts to make his move. There’s something I love about a determined hero, so I can’t wait to see how this story evolves.

I’ve loved him from afar.
Though most times he’s only a foot away.

I’m smart enough to know he’ll never be anyone’s forever.

He checks all the bad boy boxes. Tattoos. Check. Motorcycle. Check. Chip on his shoulder. Check check.

If he wasn’t my neighbor and friend I may have thrown myself at him. Okay, yeah. I wouldn’t. Because guys like Dylan don’t want a woman who writes kid’s math textbooks under him in bed. Instead, I pathetically savor morsels of moments where I have his sole attention.

That was until his archenemy moved in with me. Now suddenly, Dylan’s moving in too and warning off the first guy in a long time who’s showing me interest. Could he finally see me as more than a friend, or am I just a prize to win and show off to his enemy?

A Love Song for Rebels by Piper Lawson

I’m planning to read my ARC of the first installment in this trilogy any day now… and I know I’m going to want to read the second one almost immediately! Yes, even ARC readers have to suffer through the pain of a book ending on a cliffhanger – and I’m betting that will be the case here. Lawson is a talented writer, so I can only imagine what she’s going to do to my emotions with a multi-book series.

I swore I’d never fall for a rockstar. He swore he’d never become one.

Tyler didn’t mean to break my heart. He did it anyway.

Now, I’ll never play by anyone’s rules but mine.

When he shows up in the last place I expect, with a confession and a promise…

There’s going to be a reckoning.

Because the naive girl he shattered is gone.

And the woman in her place is ready for a fight.

A Love Song for Rebels is Book 2 in the angsty new adult, academy-inspired Rivals trilogy and must be read following A Love Song for Liars (Rivals #1).

If your favorite tropes include enemies to lovers, friends to lovers, academy, high school, or rock star / music, don’t miss Tyler and Annie’s epic story!

Sweet Spot by Rebecca Jenshak

Remember how I said I’ve been getting into sports romances more recently? Well this one features a pro golfer, it promises to have plenty of tension and banter, and I can’t wait to check it out. I’ve actually never read any of Jenshak’s sports romances – my only experience with her writing has been Electric Blue Love (which I loved) – so I’m looking forward to this one.

Lincoln Reeves may be a pro golfer and revered swing coach, but when I met him, he was just one more person telling me I wasn’t good enough.

So, I did what any girl in my position would do. I told him to get lost and to take his arrogant, annoying smirk with him. I never expected to see him again. I certainly didn’t expect to run into him that same night after one too many tequila shots.

Turns out, he’s kind of a big deal. Okay, fine, a really big deal. In fact, he might be the one person that can take my game to the next level.

Convincing him to help will be difficult.

Not throwing my club at his handsome face when he makes me work harder than I thought humanly possible will be excruciating.

But not falling for him will be the hardest thing of all.

Hot Mess by Emma Hart

The heroine in this book sounds like she is, in fact, a hot mess. Pair that will a sexy single dad and an adorable kid, and it sounds like rom com gold to me. Emma Hart’s books are always quick and sexy with quirky humor, so it promises to be perfect escapism during the work week.

What do you do when the whole world has seen you getting down and dirty in a broom closet?

I, Elle Evans, am on the run.

Not from the fuzz—although that would be more exciting.

No, I’m on the run from the four-year-old private tape that, thanks to my vengeful ex, has probably already ruined my vlogging career.

There’s nothing like the entire world knowing what you look like mid-O.

Creek Keys, Florida, is a million miles away from NYC and the perfect place for me to hide for the rest of summer until I can figure out what I’m going to do.

Something that’s easier said than done since my new landlord’s daughter thinks you’re God’s greatest gift. Even better? Their beach house is right next to the one I’m renting, so there’s no getting away from her—or her hot, British dad.

Who most definitely does not think I’m role model material.

He might be right.

The problem is that neither of us can say no to her.

Or each other.

The Hunter by L.J. Shen

Truth? I’m not one of L.J. Shen’s avid fans. I think she’s a very talented writer, but I also think she takes things too far sometimes – especially recently. So while I’m very much looking forward to this release… I also think there’s a good chance that I’m going to hate it. Why would I put myself through that? Because the risk is worth the reward – when she’s good, she is GREAT, and her books are always immersive, intense reads that pull me in.

Always a Bridesmaid by Cindi Madsen

This looks like a sweet, low angst romance and my experience with Madsen’s writing has always been good. That cover caught my attention immediately (yes, I do judge books by their covers) and the ARC is already on my Kindle, so I’ll be reading this one soon. It’s got a commitment-phobic for a hero and a meet cute that promises to be unique.

Violet Abrams may have been a bridesmaid no less than seven times, but her wedding day was near—she could feel it. Until her longtime boyfriend left her for someone else. That’s just fine—she has her photography and a new project redesigning her sister’s bakery to keep her happy and fulfilled. Fast-forward to the day of his wedding, though, when Violet might have accidentally, totally not on purpose, started a fire. And… Officially the worst day ever.

Firefighter Ford Maguire thought he’d seen it all. Until he’s called out because someone tried to set the local bakery on fire…with a wedding magazine? The little arsonist might be the cutest woman he’s ever seen, but he’s too career-focused to consider something serious. Still, Violet seems like a great person to help him navigate his upcoming “man of honor” duties in his best friend’s wedding.

Pretty soon, not only is Violet giving him lessons on all things weddings, she’s helping him train his latest rescue-dog recruit puppies and weaving her way seamlessly into his lone-wolf lifestyle. But forever is the last thing on Ford’s mind, and if there’s one thing a perpetual bridesmaid knows, it’s the importance of a happily ever after.

Love on Beach Avenue by Jennifer Probst

This one’s kind of cheating, because… I’ve already read it, and I know I liked it. It’s an opposites attract romance that pairs a cynic and a romantic as they help plan a wedding. Probst is a solid writer, so this semi-serious romance is an interesting blend of light and emotional. The hero was a little overbearing, but I loved the growth of intimacy and depth of the story.

True love is in the details for the Jersey shore’s premier wedding planner in this heart-swooning series about big dreams and happy endings from New York Times bestselling author Jennifer Probst.

Avery Sunshine might not have a soul mate of her own, but she still believes in happily ever after—for her clients. Making dreams come true is her business at Sunshine Bridal, which she runs with her two sisters. When her best friend announces her engagement, Avery is thrilled to take charge of the giddy bride-to-be’s big day. Less thrilling? Her best friend’s arrogant and demanding brother, who just so happens to be the man of honor.

Carter Ross’s first instinct: call 911. He promised to always take care of his impulsive little sister, and he honors that vow. Even if it means taking over her wedding, where he is sure Avery will fail. At best, Avery is unpredictable. At worst, if she’s anything like the spitfire of a college girl he remembers, the main event could run wild.

With Avery and Carter wrestling for control, tempers heat up. So does the spark of attraction they’re fighting with every kiss. As the wedding draws near, it’s time to reconcile a rocky past and make a decision that could change everyone’s lives. Because what they’re rebelling against looks a lot like love.
