Lighter than anything I’ve read by Karina Halle but still very much her style, this is great escapism with a slow burn that turns scorching, some humor, a touch of suspense, and a grumbly hero that I just wanted more of. I loved Halle’s inclusion of a few nods to the current situation in the world – some forced proximity, reassessment of what’s important in life, and the reliance on basic items – without focusing on anything too heavy for long. While I do think that this lacks a little bit of Halle’s typical polish and the details of the boating plot overtook the romance at times, I still devoured this in one sitting and enjoyed it from page one.
The story follows Daisy, a woman who gives off the impression that she’s got the perfect life… until things start to unravel for her. She gets laid off, finds out her boyfriend is cheating, and then has to travel to New Zealand for her estranged sister’s wedding alone. While there, she clashes with the grouchy best man, who thinks she’s a bit of a princess and doesn’t appreciate all that she has. Tai and Daisy continue to butt heads as they find themselves on a 10-day boating expedition with the newlyweds – and the whole dynamic changes once things start to get a little too real.
This straddled the line between 4 and 5 stars for me – Halle is a talented writer, so her work is always top notch, but I do feel like there were a few things that could’ve been explored further. While I liked Tai a lot, we really don’t get to know him well – not only is he extremely guarded, but his backstory doesn’t come into focus until later on, and then it only scratched the surface. There were threads that were never touched upon – his scarred knuckles, his tattoo, his past relationship… there were just things that I thought we’d find out about and never really did. Some of the technical elements also took away from the romance, making it difficult to feel the chemistry at times. Essentially, my only real complaint is that I wanted MORE – more of Tai, more chemistry-filled moments, more tenderness in the steamy scenes. It’s still a very solid read and any complaints that I have are minor, but I definitely do have a few. If you’re looking for a sexy slow burn that will hold your interest, then this will certainly satisfy. I was lucky enough to receive an ARC and am voluntarily leaving a review of this tropical romance.
