Such a heartfelt, emotional read! Coll is one of those authors whose work gets better and better every time I read one of her books. I seriously considered a 5-star rating for this one, and honestly, there’s not much holding me back from giving it one. The story is realistic, relatable, sweet with just a touch of sexy, and easy to read in one sitting. I love that her characters always feel like real people, with everyday issues and vulnerabilities. This one is perhaps just a little too somber for my tastes – our hero is a widower who isn’t sure he’ll ever be ready to love again, after all – but I enjoyed it from start to finish.
The story follows Hadley, an attorney who gets the wake up call she needed when her boyfriend proposes. She’s been letting her father dictate how she lives her life, and that’s never been more obvious than when the man her father encouraged her to start dating puts her on the spot in public. Determined to make a change, Hadley sets out on her own, starting up a new law firm with some friends. When she meets Cade, there’s an instant attraction there but sadness is written all over his face. A widower, Cade is just starting to realize that he needs to move forward – and his sexy new attorney might be the person he can do that with.
I really liked both of these characters and was invested in them finding their happily ever after. They’ve each got things they need to work on, but see the potential for something great. There’s just enough steam to keep it sexy while still being very much focused on the emotional connection, and I think Coll does an excellent job building intimacy, even in such a quick read. The only place this really falters for me is the tone; it was serious from start to finish, and while I wouldn’t say it gets super heavy, I also wanted a little more lightness. I read it in one sitting and had no trouble keeping invested in the story – and I definitely want to see a few of the other characters find their own happy ending.
