This is the kind of romance that sneaks up on you; the kind of story you’re not sure you’re loving until all of a sudden you realize that you’re completely invested in it. It’s a slow emotional burn, focusing on the physical before transitioning into a more heartfelt read. Our couple begins the story having just been intimate for the first time, and for two people who have been in each other’s lives for years, that’s a major complication. While there’s obvious lust and heat between them, it takes them longer to realize that there just might be more too. So this is the kind of rom-not-so-com that feels light but also has depth that’ll surprise you.
The story follows Jared and Presley the morning after they cross the line. Jared is Presley’s brother’s best friend/roommate/co-worker, so he’s been a huge part of her life since she was sixteen. While Jared feels all kinds of guilt for sleeping with his friend’s sister (a woman who has just gone through a bad breakup), Presley’s interested in more – or at least more time between the sheets. As the two navigate the changes and come to terms with how they really feel about each other, Jared also helps Presley through some drama with her ex. They begin to see a whole new side to each other, and that’s definitely not a bad thing.
Presley’s the kind of heroine who is so strong that she’s afraid to be weak. She doesn’t like to admit that she might need some help at times, and Jared is just the kind of guy to offer it up without hesitation. He’s known Presley long enough to understand what’s going through her mind, and the addition of their shared lust only strengthens his desire to get closer. While these two might seem like they’re only lusting after each other, there is so much history between them that it can never truly just be heat. I loved Jared a lot, and while I wasn’t always sure that I loved Presley (she got some real insecurities), I loved the depth that she brings to the story. It’s steamy, light, heartfelt, and there are touches of suspense that add a bit of intensity. Though part of a series, this can easily be appreciated as a standalone, and I’d love to read more about some of the supporting characters. I received a free copy via Grey’s Promotions and am voluntarily leaving a review of this steamy, suspenseful romance.
A little harmless flirting never hurt anyone.
Presley, I screwed up, I’m sorry. You were vulnerable and I was supposed to be the good guy. Last thing I ever wanted to do was betray your trust, or worse, hurt you. I should never have even kissed you, let alone . . . yeah, well we both know how that ended. You’re my best friend’s sister for Christ’s sake, what was I even thinking? Clearly, I wasn’t. I’m so mad at myself, I want to break my own legs, save Tibbs the trouble. So yeah, I know this isn’t much of an apology, but I needed to make sure you’re okay. Let me know things are still cool between us or at least, what I can do to make it up to you. And it’s probably for the best if we keep this between just us. I swear on my mother, I’ll never touch you again.
Leighton, not sure who you thought you were with last night, but it wasn’t some vulnerable little girl who needs protecting. I assumed that was pretty clear when I took you to MY bed. Don’t pretend that last night wasn’t exactly what we both wanted. We’ve been flirting with each other for years, and I finally got tired of playing games. As for my brother, he doesn’t and will never have a say in who I invite into my life or body—not his business. But if you’re scared that’s your hang up not mine. So save your apology, and your good intentions, and don’t treat me like I’m a woman who didn’t know what she was doing. Oh, and tell your mother I said hi.
