Okay, there are two things you need to know before we go any further. One, this is very much a survival romance with a LOT of time spent on the journey. And two, it’s also very much an instalove romance with zero bad boy vibes, despite our hero being freshly released from prison. Still with me? Good, because though this was not at all what I expected it to be, it was a unique, engrossing, sweet read that felt decidedly different than anything I’ve read recently. If I ponder the over the top vibe of this for too long, I’ll be tempted to drop my rating, but… I’m not going to do that. This couple was all kinds of adorable together, and I loved this exceedingly sweet hero.
The story follows Halder, a man who has spent the last five years in prison paying for a crime he didn’t commit. When he is abruptly released early, it throws his whole world into a tailspin – and that’s BEFORE he’s dropped off in the wilderness. Stranded and left to figure out a way to survive, Halder’s only companion is the social worker he crushed on in prison, Blakely. Though the two have never officially met, there’s a mutual attraction there that becomes undeniable as they fight to survive the elements together.
The weirdest thing about this story? Of all the issues Halder and Blakely have, the fact that he’s a convicted criminal isn’t one of them. I really expected that to be the main source of tension between them, but it just… wasn’t. Blakely is WAY too nice and trusting, but I loved her sassiness. Halder is also not the man you’d expect based on the premise, and turned out to be one of the kindest, least alpha heroes I’ve read from this author, while still being loyal and extremely protective. I loved the forced proximity and the dialogue is top notch. That’s where this author excels in a big way; even as Halder and Blakely struggle with the elements, their banter shines through. So while this wasn’t a complete win for me, the conversation and unique feel made it an engrossing read. It has a lot of things this author is known for while still being very different, and I was caught up in the story. I received an early copy via Candi Kane PR and am voluntarily leaving a review of this survival romance.
Arrested. Wrongfully accused. Sentenced to ten years.
But the steel bars release me early.
After serving half of my time for a crime I didn’t commit, they grant me parole—with a very short leash. My second chance at freedom begins now, and I won’t waste it. I should’ve been paying more attention.
Ambushed. Captured. Stranded.
When I wake in the depths of a snowy forest, all seems lost. I’ve been left alone in the wilderness with zero means of escape. Until someone rouses beside me.
I recognize Blakely Cross instantly, yet she’s barely more than a stranger. Now she’s stuck with me in the worst possible place, as collateral damage.
Blakely blames me, and rightfully so. This entire situation is my fault. Our destinies are inadvertently twisted together by forces far larger than us. Whether she hates me or not, we need each other to stay alive.
Cope. Adapt. Persevere.
They tossed us out to be buried, but underestimated our determination. The bond we’re building will overcome the harshest conditions.
And we’re not willing to surrender.
