⭐️⭐️⭐️ REVIEW: Code Name: Rook by Sawyer Bennett

With this short, sexy, and suspenseful addition to the series, we finally get to see how Cage gets himself out of his predicament. I loved catching up with the team and learning more about where the series is going next. Cage makes an adorably sexy (and clueless) hero, and it was fun seeing the playboy fall so hard. The problem? The blurb reveals the ENTIRE plot – seriously, all of it – and there is a TON of overlap between the last book and this one, so there was no freshness to the story. It’s still a fun read, but that paired with Cage’s calculated deception led to a disconnect for me.

The story follows Cage, a security operative who has always preferred one night stands over relationships. He’s got a job he loves and a lifestyle that keeps him on the road, so there’s no room in his life for a woman. Until he meets Jaime. What starts as a one night stand turns into something more, and Cage has to figure out how to make that work. Not only has he never been in a relationship (and has no idea how to navigate one), but they started off with a small lie that gets bigger every day that it sits between them.

I like the concept behind this one, and Bennett’s writing is solid as always. Had I not already known so much about their relationship from the previous book, this likely would’ve been a 4-star read for me. But it sort of just felt like I was reading to get caught up to present day. Anyone who has read Ghost knows just how far Cage lets things get before telling the truth, but it feels a lot more calculated in this. Minor spoiler here: he actually acknowledges that he married Jaime while she was drunk because he knew it would be more difficult for her to leave him once the truth is revealed. Digest that for a second. Wow. I think that tells you all you need to know about the dynamic; we know Cage is lying, and Jaime is living in blissful ignorance. That makes it somewhat difficult to root for the relationship, no matter how well they get along in and out of the bedroom. I liked it, I’m looking forward to more from the series, but it definitely wasn’t my favorite. I received an early copy via the author and am voluntarily leaving a review of this suspenseful romance.

Being a highly skilled operative for a company like Jameson Force Security is exhilarating and important work…until it comes time to date. I like to keep my profession under wraps for a number of reasons. Some of what we do is top secret, most of what we do is dangerous, and more than one woman has tried to latch onto me because she was more enamored with what I do than who Cage Murdock really is. And since I’m more of a ‘here for the night’ than a ‘here for forever’ kind of guy, what’s the harm in a little white lie about my job?

My harmless deceit has never failed me. Until now. Because I met the most amazing woman and did the unthinkable. I married her. And now my beautiful, unsuspecting, probably-going-to-leave-my-sorry-behind-when-she-finds-out-the-truth wife doesn’t know that I’m not a used car salesman like I told her when we met.

As it typically does with lies, the truth is about to come out in a big way when Jaime unwittingly gets herself mixed up with some unsavory characters and I, along with the team at Jameson, have to intervene. Now I need to save my girl and hope I can save my marriage too. Let’s just say I have some serious explaining to do.

    What. The. Ever. Loving. Fuck.

Sorry for the anger wave, but that is a seriously messed up dynamic that should not be romanticized. (I once had a guy ask me for a second date when I was drunk at a party instead of at the end of the first date, like a normal person. He even explicitly told me that he waited til the end of the party to ask me. We did have a second date, but the relationship didn’t last long.)

    1. Yeah, that’s messed up for sure! Liquid courage is almost always a bad idea. The only thing I can say in this hero’s defense is that he wouldn’t have lied to her if he intended for it to be more than a hookup, and he was in deep before he knew how to fix it. But getting married without telling her was a step too far.
