After a stellar first book in this series, I just… expected more from this. At its core, it’s a steamy, fun, friends to lovers rom com with all of the banter and chemistry I’ve come to love from Hunter’s work. I loved the history and the depth of the relationship between these two, and it’s a light, low angst read that fits with the tone of the series perfectly. But, I swear a little part of me died inside when I found out that Cooper is a manwhore – who may or may not be in love with his best friend. Everyone’s got a past, but these two LIVE TOGETHER, and I just couldn’t put that behind me. It soured the tone of the book, and the repeated references to his history didn’t do anything to change that. I’d love to rate this higher based on the fun vibe, but… I can’t.
The story follows Caroline and Cooper, best friends and roomies who have been close since they were fifteen. Except for one ill-advised kiss when they were teens, these two live in platonic bliss. They’re opposites who complement each other well, and their relationship fulfills a lot of their needs (except, perhaps, the physical ones). But lately, Caroline has been feeling the urge to put herself out there, and Cooper is only too happy to help. That all changes when Caroline accidentally sees Cooper naked, and the decidedly un-friendly thoughts they occasionally have about each other are pushed to the surface.
I always look forward to Hunter’s rom coms, and this was no exception. She excels at writing low angst, sexy romances, and this is definitely that. This storyline just rubbed me the wrong way and included too many of the elements that can make me disconnect from a friends to lovers romance – a heroine who needs to get laid (and seeks the hero’s help in doing so), a hero who has slept around while denying his feelings, etc. Even the steamy scenes were aggressive rather than romantic, kinky rather than intimate. So, while I loved a significant amount of this, there was a lingering disappointment. I’m still very much looking forward to the rest of the series, but this wasn’t a good fit for me personally. I received an early copy and am voluntarily leaving a review of this steamy friends to lovers romance.
Don’t fall for your roommate…especially when he’s your best friend.
Cooper Bennett is my best friend.
That’s all he is and all he ever will be.
Nothing will change that.
Accidentally seeing him naked? Please. So not a big deal.
Having less-than-tame thoughts? I mean, have you seen this guy? Who could blame me?
Kissing him? It was a one-time mistake, and it will not be repeated.
Falling into bed with him? Uh-oh…
It’s fine. We’re fine.
We’re Caroline and Cooper. Best friends until the end. Nothing has ever come our way that we couldn’t survive together.
Surely, we can handle this too…

Now, I don’t want to put you off the series – because it’s GREAT. Loathe Thy Neighbor easily made my Best of September list, and I have read and loved many other books by Hunter. If enemies (who aren’t really enemies) to lovers is more your thing, then check out the first book in the series. It’s light yet tense, sexy yet fun.
Don’t fall for your enemy…especially when he’s your new roommate.
Dean Evans is the worst.
Not only does the devil in disguise steal my pie on a regular basis, he also lives in the apartment right. Next. Door.
I see him all the time. At the mailboxes. In the elevator.
Every single morning.
It’s exhausting because he’s exhausting.
Now, after setting his apartment on fire, he’s my roommate…and he’s the worst at that too.
I don’t know what possessed me to let him stay with me. Pity, perhaps?
I do know that I won’t be falling for his charm.
Or that panty-dropping smirk.
His quick wit.
That body he works so hard for.
Nope. Not falling for any of it…least of all him.
There might be a fine line between love and hate, but I know exactly where I stand.

I’m a Missouri-raised gal, but currently live in North Carolina with my US Marine husband and 9-year-old dog. I spend my days begging him for a cat, and I survive off coffee, pizza, and sarcasm. When I’m not writing, you can find me binge-watching various TV shows, especially Supernatural and One Tree Hill. I like cold weather, buy more paperbacks than I’ll ever read, and I never say no to brownies.
Writing is my passion, and this is just the beginning of my journey.
