So, I’m pretty sure that driving across the country with two strange men, one of whom JUST got out of prison, during a pandemic – because, yes, this is set in present day – and then throwing yourself at the ex-con is a HORRIBLE idea. You won’t convince me otherwise. BUT, that doesn’t mean this wasn’t a sexy, interesting romance that I thoroughly enjoyed. It incorporates current events in a way that feels natural and not intrusive, making frequent references to masks and the obvious economic setbacks of many of the people these characters come in contact with, yet not lingering on the issue. In fact, the big “C” word is never even said explicitly, it’s just there in the background. It’s honestly my favorite part of the book, and one of the reasons this was so easy to devour.
The story follows JR, a man who was released from prison early because of the virus. He’s innocent of the crime he was convicted of, and just wants to clear his name and get back to his young son. To do so, JR enlists the help of his brother, and the two are set to drive across the country… though they’ve got an unexpected passenger with them. JR purchased his car from Hope, and she’s somehow found herself tagging along with the two men as they take a road trip across the country. It’s not long before attraction simmers between JR and Hope, even if he is rude and dismissive. But somewhere along the way, JR finds himself falling for the ray of hope beside him, and even possibly looking forward to a better life.
I do have a few issues with this one, but I really enjoyed it. I love a good road trip romance, and this one flew by. It’s got touches of suspense, some steam to heat things up, and a storyline that gets more interesting as it goes. Plus, I loved the frequent nods towards current events. At this point, it would feel incredibly unrealistic for a road trip to happen without some references to the pandemic, and I appreciated the way it was incorporated. Though… the author was a little selective with how she used it. I’m not sure that many people are traveling maskless with strangers – especially strange ex-cons, but… it was certainly entertaining. Hope was a little too desperate for my liking and the instalove was a bit much, but I liked the book the whole way through. It’s probably one of my favorites from the author. I received an early copy via Give Me Books and am voluntarily leaving a review of this road trip romance.
