Full disclosure? Seeing the words “friends with benefits” in a book about two people who are clearly in love with each other makes my skin crawl. And the premeditated, “this is totally going to work” kind takes that up a notch. So that kept me from fully connecting to this otherwise sweet and steamy, heartfelt read. It’s got the chemistry and banter I’ve come to expect from these authors, paired with a touch of emotion that brings a little something extra to the story. I loved that these two became close after the death of his sister, and I loved their unwavering support of one another. The only thing I DIDN’T love about this quick and sexy read is their insistence that they could keep feelings out of the equation.
The story follows Ruby and Jesse, two people who have been in each other’s lives for years but didn’t truly become close until the death of the person who brought them together – Jesse’s sister. They bonded over their shared grief and have become a support system for each other. So when Jesse reveals that his sister left a list of tasks for Ruby to complete in order to push her out of her comfort zone (no, don’t worry, it’s not a creepy/sexy list), it seems only natural that they tackle it together. Doing so brings them closer than ever, but Jesse is set to move across the country in a few weeks, and that means anything they share can only be temporary.
I really enjoyed this writing duo’s last book (and always enjoy Blakely’s light, sexy reads), so I didn’t hesitate to check this one out. It’s got everything that I look forward to from a low angst romance – likable characters, palpable chemistry, easy banter, and all kinds of sexual tension. It’s steamy without being over the top, and I liked the connection between them. I also loved the added emotional element to this one, which was unexpected but not unwelcome. This still reads very quickly and stays light, but there are a few bittersweet moments that add something to the story. I also loved how close these two are, even from the start. That makes the fast pace more believable, and made me root for them even more. That’s also probably why the friends with benefits thing hit me a little harder with this one. They 100% should’ve known better, and even acknowledge that a time or two. Regardless, it’s still a sexy, fun romance and is the kind of story that you can read in one sitting. I received an early copy and am voluntarily leaving a review of this steamy romance.
A sexy best friend’s brother romance from bestselling authors Lauren Blakely and Lili Valente!
I’m the wrong guy for her.
She’s sunshine and cherry pie. I’m whiskey and fast cars. I’m also keeping one hell of a secret from the woman I’ve wanted for years.
But when I find a list my sister left behind for Ruby, I’ve got no choice but to offer the sexy, big-hearted girl next door both a road trip and a chance.
A chance to discover how big she can dream.
And if some of those dreams play out in the bedroom? Well, there’s nothing wrong with a few — okay, several — hot nights together as we hit the beach, visit old stomping grounds, and test all sorts of limits, in and out of the sheets.
Seven days, then I’m off, moving across the country, far away from her.
No way can things get complicated in a week. Ruby and I aren’t the kind of dream that has a shot of coming true.
Especially once she learns what I’ve done.
