Here’s a little raw honesty: that blurb is terrible, seriously terrible. And I say that as someone who loves this author’s books. I went into this one thinking that I was reading a marriage of convenience/second chance kind of story, featuring adult characters. It’s actually a high school romance, with a pretty typical good girl/rich jerk storyline and major Romeo and Juliet vibes. Which… is really not what I was expecting, lol. So there were definitely times when I struggled with this one, not because the writing is bad, but because it didn’t meet my expectations – at all. Somewhere along the way, I became hooked on the romance, so I’m willing to forgive a few of the issues. But it’s certainly not my favorite from the author.
The story follows August, a 19-year-old trust fund kid who loves to rebel against what’s expected of him. He’s got long hair, piercings, tattoos, and spends most of his time partying. But an encounter with Sheridan – a.k.a. the forbidden good girl born into a family that hates his own – sparks something inside him. What starts as a mission to get revenge on the girl who seems to have everything he doesn’t turns into something else entirely, and it’s not long before August is acting out of character. But their families will never approve of a relationship, so this pairing is doomed before it gets started.
Honestly? The part of this book that I was most looking forward to was the marriage storyline, which doesn’t happen for… let’s say “a while.” I spent a significant amount of time waiting for this to turn into the book that’s advertised, and that never happened. And yet, I enjoyed what I did read enough that I became invested in the love story. August is definitely the kind of tortured bad boy who steals your heart when you’re not looking, and Sheridan is all kinds of sweet. It’s a classic new adult pairing (complete with a few things that made me cringe), but the author’s writing is so addictive that it’s easy to get drawn in. I loved the Romeo and Juliet vibes, the mystery surrounding everything, and the story reads very quickly. Was it what I was hoping for? No, it was not. It sits somewhere between 3 and 4 stars for me. Was it still an interesting, engaging read? Yes, especially if you like new adult romance. I received an early copy via the author and am voluntarily leaving a review of this sexy high school romance.
“I’m sorry,” I say.
Her brows lift. “For what?”
“For kissing you like you meant something to me. And for f**cking you like you didn’t.”
I loved him. I lost him. And now he’s back.
August Monreaux was a stormy sea of a man, the dark between the stars, an electric chill cutting through a crowded room—all wrapped into one wicked, beautiful package.
He was also off-limits.
My entire life, I was kept a safe distance from the notoriously virulent Monreauxs, banned from so much as breathing the same air. And like the good daughter I was, I obeyed those rules.
Until the one time I didn’t …
Only while I sampled him, he devoured me like the forbidden fruit that I was. And in the blink of an eye, my worst enemy became my first love. His poison became my antidote. His touch, my addiction.
After we severed our ill-fated ties, I thought I’d never see him again.
Until he crashed back into my life at the worst possible moment—and asked me to marry him.
But it wasn’t that simple.
It never is.
Turns out marrying a wealthy powerhouse of a man comes with a price.
But walking away, could cost me everything.
