⭐️⭐️⭐️ REVIEW: Sullivan by Laramie Briscoe

It’s possible that I may have had different feelings about this book had the opening not turned me off so much. Within the first 5% of the story, Sullivan has Shelby in his handcuffs (in a sexual way) – while she’s drunk enough that he assumes she won’t remember in the morning. That’s gonna get a lip curl from me no matter what, and the fact that he’s a cop just makes it worse. My interest in the story fizzled out pretty quickly after that, and the storyline didn’t do much to hook me back in. I do like the author’s easy, sexy writing style and the touch of suspense that makes this read quickly, but it all felt like instalove without any major character (or relationship) development. The most difficult reviews to write are the ones for books that you weren’t emotionally invested in, and that’s where I’m at with this one.

The story follows Sullivan and Shelby, neighbors who are both pretty new to town and starting fresh. They’ve been friendly for awhile, but crossed a line one night, and now there’s an awkwardness between them. When they finally clear the air, it’s obvious that there’s still attraction simmering between them, and they’ve got to figure out how to move forward. Add in some drama with one of Shelby’s clients (triggers involved), and it doesn’t take long before they’re getting closer.

I don’t know, this just felt really basic to me. It starts out sexual and stays that way for much of the book, remaining pretty shallow and barely scratching the surface. Things move at a rapid pace, and there weren’t any scenes that I felt were overly romantic, so I didn’t really get invested in the relationship. While there was nothing explicitly “bad” about the story, I feel like I could’ve set it aside at any moment and forgotten all about it. Fans of the series will probably enjoy this the most, but I’ve read better from the author. I appreciated receiving an early copy and am voluntarily leaving a review, but this was just okay for me.

From USA Today and Wall Street Journal bestselling author, Laramie Briscoe, comes the fifth book in the popular Laurel Springs Emergency Response Series.”

Sullivan Baker

Moving to Laurel Springs and joining the LSERT was the best spur-of-the-moment decision I ever made. Here, out from under the expectations of my Police Chief father, I’m thriving.

I’ve found a boldness and confidence I never had in Paradise Lost.

And a woman who I can’t stop thinking about, dreaming about, and can’t seem to stay away from. Attorney Shelby Bruce knocked me for a loop and my head hasn’t stopped spinning since the night of our ‘friendmas’ Christmas party.

When there’s a physical threat to her well-being, I won’t stop at anything to protect her, even if it means losing a piece of myself in the process.

Shelby Bruce

Houston was my home until the big city reached out and bit me. Laurel Springs is more my speed, and I’ve settled into life here.

A new friend group, building my practice from the ground up, and a smoking hot new love interest has my life extremely busy and full. I’m content. More content than I ever was in my old life.

That all changes when I revise a will for one of the pillars of the Laurel Springs community. Effectively, she cuts her grandson out of her fortune. When he finds out it’s not pretty.

Worse. He blames me.

But something amazing happens. Day by day, I realize the relationships I’ve built within the community and the LSERT are stronger than I ever imagined. Especially when Sullivan Baker saves not only my life, but my heart.
