Honestly, this book is downright disrespectful to all of the rom com lovers out there. It’s what someone writes when they have only the vaguest sense of what makes a rom com great; an obvious attempt to throw together something that will sell. You know what makes for a great rom com? Actual chemistry between the characters, jokes that are funny, relationship development, and heroes who don’t hook up with a never-ending parade of other girls in front of the heroine. The “jokes” in this are crude and misogynistic, the characters are childish, and the “romance” is almost nonexistent. And we haven’t even talked about the other stuff that makes this book cringeworthy yet.
Essentially, the story follows Leo and Mila, two friends who have been close since they were in diapers. When Leo was 16, he made a Playboy Pact with his buddies, promising to remain single. Six years later, and Leo has lived up to that – hooking up with girls on a constant basis (as in, seeing how many he can sleep with in one night), often with the help of his wingwoman, Mila. It’s not until Leo finds out that Mila might be leaving town – with one of his best friends – that things change.
It’s not my first time reading something from this author, and that’s probably why I can’t get over how shockingly atrocious it is. She CAN and HAS written much better. I can count the number of books that I’ve 1-starred on one hand, but this deserves it. It’s like 50% dumb sex jokes, 40% scenes the couple is not in together, and 10% romance. Even if I could get past the garbage humor or the couple’s entirely problematic history, there’s zero relationship development. The “hero” is completely comfortable hooking up with girl after girl right in front of the heroine, but the moment one of his friends shows an interest, he’s suddenly a territorial jerk. The back half is one of the worst things I have ever read, and the entire book just felt like it was written by a teenager. I appreciated receiving an early copy and am voluntarily leaving a review, but this was so far from good that it’s not even funny.
From Wall Street Journal & USA Today Bestselling Author M. Robinson comes a new stand-alone romantic comedy.
What happens when you make a pact with your boys to stay single and never fall in love?
Well, you get the Playboy Pact.
We were friends, she and I.
It was easy.
That was our dynamic.
We had a system.
An unspoken arrangement.
We were there for each other through thick and thin. We had an unbreakable bond. Nobody understood our friendship. Because a guy and a girl couldn’t just be best friends without emotions getting involved, right?
Without noticing, everything shifted, and I was experiencing all these new feelings…
For the first time in my life, Mila wasn’t merely a girl I trusted and hung out with on a regular basis.
She had become…
…the woman I was in love with.
