If you’ve ever read a second chance romance that made you want to sit the characters down and tell them that they’ve wasted fifteen years of their lives being bitter about a breakup without ever ONCE having an actual conversation about it… well, you have an idea of how this one goes. Second chance lovers can feel free to ignore my gripes, because this is well written overall and does address some important, heavy topics. But I felt like I’d read a lot of it before – possibly from this author. It’s solid as a series starter and does have some great components, but it also drove me a little crazy.
The story follows Gray and Jessica, former high school sweethearts who haven’t seen each other for fourteen years. While they had the kind of love everyone hopes for at least once in their life, Jessica was insecure about her place in Gray’s future. She’s from the wrong side of town and Gray’s family made it clear that they would never accept her, so she let teenage insecurities tear them apart – not that she ever explained any of that to Gray. Jessica is back in town following a plane crash that nearly took her life, and it has put some things in perspective. The guy she’s always loved is still in town, but he’s now more guarded and a single dad who will protect his daughter at all costs.
I wish this author would write more books that are NOT second chance romances, because she really is very talented and her covers always lure me in. But I’ve sort of reached my limit on how many of these angsty second chance romances I can read from her – they’re starting to blend together. As a series starter, this is more successful. We’re introduced to some of the couples that are going to be featured in future books, and I’m curious about how they’ll play out. I love the family component and the relationships between them, so these interconnected standalones will all build on each other. Which, yes, is why I read this one; the books are JUST connected enough that you’ll miss out if you don’t read in order. Most of the author’s readers are going to love this, but if you’re burned out on her second chance romances, then this might get old quickly. I received an early copy and am voluntarily leaving a review of this angsty romance.
