⭐️⭐️⭐️ REVIEW: My Saving Grace by Melanie Moreland

I’m sorry to say that I didn’t love it, and that’s disappointing because it started off so strong. Unfortunately, the hero – and a ton of miscommunication – ruined this one. I love the author’s writing style, so there’s a lot that worked for me, from the strong heroine, to the tenders moments, to the steamy ones as well. I started out really loving the dynamic, and saw all kinds of potential in the moody, misunderstood hero who just couldn’t seem to stop putting his foot in his mouth. But the pacing threw me off, and then the hero made a complete 180 that absolutely did not work for me.

The story follows Grace, a law student just starting an internship with a well-respected but moody lawyer. Jaxson is professional with everyone else, but can’t seem to help himself around Grace. She’s a spitfire who gives as good as she gets, so their work relationship quickly evolves into something else entirely. Though they both know that their careers are on the line if anyone finds out about their (mostly) sexual relationship, it’s impossible to ignore the chemistry between them. Jaxson may not believe in love or forever, but he wants as much time with Grace as he can get.

Looking back, I actually think the prologue is where the problems began, though I didn’t completely realize it at the time. We discover that Jaxson and Grace had a drunken Vegas wedding. At least, Grace was drunk enough not to remember – and she isn’t happy. Jaxson is kinda gleeful about the whole thing, which is a problem because, one, a lawyer should know better than to sleep with and marry a woman who was drunk enough not to remember her actions in the morning, and two, it’s the exact opposite of how he’s portrayed in the vast majority of the book. I had a significant amount of confusion during parts of the story while trying to understand Jaxson’s motivations. He’s a BIG jerk at one point, then changes his mind without explaining himself. That’s where this lost me. So, while the writing was strong in a lot of ways, there were some definite issues. It does make a great transitional book between the Vested Interest series and this one. I’ve read several of the author’s books but not that particular series, and I had no trouble following along with the characters. There are some great family moments that fans of the series are sure to enjoy, but this easily stands on its own and kicks things off well. It’s successful in many ways, but I wish the romance had evolved differently. I received an early copy and am voluntarily leaving a review of this office romance.
