Ah, yes, the dream guy continues to be mythical, it seems. This hero is only ready for commitment now because he’s pushing 40, spent nearly two decades being “devotedly single” (aka a bit of a player), and is now a single parent to a kid he never knew about. I don’t love the trope when it’s a baby being dropped off at a manhoe’s house, and I guess I don’t love it when the child is older either. That’s completely personal preference and not really reflective of the quality of this particular book, which is classic Blakely – though not one of her better ones. There’s plenty of playful banter, lots of chemistry, and a sweet/sexy, low angst vibe that makes this a quick, easy read. There were a lot more things that bugged me about the story than her usual, but it’s still a fun, lighthearted read.
The story follows Liam, a veterinarian who has left the city to live the small town lifestyle with his son. A former serial dater, Liam didn’t know he had a son until a few years ago, and now he wants to give him the stable home life he had growing up. That also means he’s ready to start dating in earnest… which is a shame, because his sexy new neighbor would be the exact woman he could see starting a family with if (1) it wasn’t a terrible idea to start dating someone you’ll see every day, and (2) she was interested in a relationship. Liam and January are both determined to ignore the chemistry that sparks between them, because they know they’re looking for different things. But when Liam starts dating other women, it becomes obvious that the connection between them is stronger than ever.
Blakely’s books always make for light and sexy reads, and this is definitely that. I loved the banter and the low angst feel. I also kinda liked that this couple is a little older (39/37), though they have the same issues with communication as many of the teenage couples I’ve read about in the past. I guess I just expected this to be swoonier. Liam’s personality is not at all what I expected from the blurb, and the evolution of this relationship is also vastly different than anticipated. We’ll call this one instalust that’s denied until it can no longer be ignored, and the conflict was not my favorite. The whole thing just wasn’t my favorite, it’s as simple as that. I’m sure many readers will enjoy this, but I’ve read at least a dozen books by this author that I’ve liked better.
A sexy, swoony falling-for-the-neighbor standalone romance from #1 New York Times bestselling author Lauren Blakely!
Just my luck – my new next door neighbor is a unicorn.
Yep, the British hottie is clearly a mythical man because – get this – he’s a sexy, witty, charming, big-hearted single dad.
Who, wait for it, wants to find Mrs. Right and get hitched.
He’s a once-in-a-blue-moon kind of man, and it’s a darn shame I’m not on the market. If I were, his accent alone would melt me. Add in the fact that he’s a veterinarian, and my animal-loving heart would be flip flopping.
But my heart’s on the mend. I’m a single parent like him, and raising my teenage daughter is my top priority. Plus, falling for a guy who shares your property line is a line you shouldn’t cross.
Still, I’m an outgoing gal, so I do the neighborly thing and offer to be his dating insider.
Surely, I can help this small town’s most eligible bachelor ever navigate his way through all the fantastic single ladies eager to make his acquaintance.
What could possibly go wrong in helping the dream guy next door find his one true love?
So I set him up on one date, two dates, three dates — and I’m about to find out exactly how dangerous my offer is.
