If I think about my rating for too long, I’ll probably drop it to 3 stars, but this was just the kind of quick, sexy, suspenseful read that I expected it to be. While it’s glaringly obvious that this was written by two different people, the story is tropey goodness with a royal spin. Our couple wastes no time in heating up the pages, and the action (outside of the bedroom, of course) makes the story fly by. It’s a good start to what promises to be a fun, steamy series of interconnected standalones, and I enjoyed most of it. But – and this is a big but – I got whiplash from how many times this couple changed their minds. I honestly had no idea what these two were thinking about each other, because it would change from page to page. Granted, the intention was for them to have mixed feelings, but it felt more like inconsistency than indecision.
The story follows London, a princess who just turned 29. She’s the youngest of four siblings, and she’d love to have the freedom to live her life the way she wants. Unfortunately, that unravels when it’s revealed that one of the siblings needs to produce an heir before they’ve all turned 30 or the family loses their right to the throne. As London grapples with this news, she heads out of town and finds herself in a world of trouble. The good news? The sexy stranger she runs into turns out to be a bodyguard, and Kannon would give his life to protect the runaway royal. It’s not long before Kannon and London are fighting their attraction to each other, but neither one is entirely sure where it will lead.
I found myself wanting to say, “JUST MAKE UP YOUR MIND ALREADY” several times, because there’s a ton of push/pull and mixed messages between these two. I blame that partially on the writing itself, but it’s also part of the storyline. I liked Kannon and London together, and the bodyguard/princess dynamic almost always works for me, so there was still a lot of good stuff going on. The steam and action make this fly by, and I’m curious to read some of the other stories that are teased here. I’m particularly intrigued by Roman and perhaps Wilder, but the roguish Breck will have to win me over. I didn’t love this, but I enjoyed it enough to continue with the series. If you’re looking for something quick, sexy, and simple, then this will definitely do the trick. It’s low angst and the kind of romance that you can read in one sitting. All in all, a (mostly) solid series starter. I received an early copy and am voluntarily leaving a review of this royal romance.
