I’m still mulling over my thoughts about this, but the general idea is: it didn’t work for me. The level of miscommunication is CRAZY, and crazy frustrating – from start to finish. There are a few glaring omissions in the blurb that make this a completely different reading experience than expected, and not really in a good way. It gets points for being an unexpected, unique story, but I disagreed with almost every decision that these characters made. And I didn’t like the heroine at all, nor could I empathize with the hero. I wouldn’t call this a traditional “romance,” but their relationship is at the heart of the story… despite the fact that our heroine is in a serious relationship with another man. This HEAVY (potentially triggering) love story is for those who are in the mood for ALL of the frustrating angst.
I can’t describe the plot without giving away a few things that aren’t in the blurb, so skip this part if you want to go in completely blind. Most of this is revealed in the first chapter. Essentially, the story follows a divorced couple, Emmett and Tatum. We see their love story in flashbacks, as well as the devastating aftermath in present day. It’s been seventeen years since they got married and five years since they lost it all. Emmett made a promise to Tatum years ago that he would always put their daughter, Lucy, first, and he’s kept that promise no matter the consequences. Emmett is keeping a major secret about the tragedy that tore them apart, and now he’s suffering in silence as he watches his (ex-)wife move on with another man. But he’s never stopped loving Tatum, and if the truth ever came out… who knows what she would think.
This isn’t going to be a love story for everyone. Not only is it not a true romance (it’s not really true women’s fiction either), but the story also deals with several topics that may be triggering, especially if you’re a parent. Plus, Tatum is in a relationship in present day, so that will be an issue for anyone who doesn’t tolerate cheating in romance, be it emotional or otherwise. I can’t say that I enjoyed that aspect of the story, but the drop in my rating is primarily due to the miscommunication. With a simple conversation, years and YEARS of heartache could’ve been avoided. And I’m not actually convinced that Emmett’s decision benefitted Lucy, so it was all for nothing, in my mind. That’s what drags this down; if I can’t empathize with either character in an angsty story, then the whole thing is in trouble. I’d love to rate this higher because the writing is strong in so many ways, but the story as a whole just isn’t. I received an early copy and am voluntarily leaving a review of this second chance romance.
