If you thought the first book in this series of interconnected standalones was STEAMY, well, this might’ve been even hotter. It’s a scorching hot fling to more romance with a side of forbidden, age gap vibes. I didn’t find either character even remotely relatable – they’re rich, beautiful people with a very slow-to-burn emotional connection – but Mann certainly delivers the spice and a devourable story. If you’re in it for the heat and less for the heart, then this is a super sexy, entertaining read. I liked the twists and turns along the way, and Mann’s writing is excellent. It slowly simmers into a great, forbidden story, and it was quite the ride to get there.
The story follows Jenner, a playboy attorney who travels for work and is married to his job. This workaholic doesn’t have time for a relationship, but he’s happy to sample women every place he goes. So when he meets Jo while on a business trip, it doesn’t take long for a spark to ignite between them. What starts as a one night stand turns into a vacation fling, but saying goodbye doesn’t feel right this time. As the two try to figure out if they have what it takes to make a long distance relationship work, they have to navigate many other issues along the way – Jo’s age, the vast differences in their lifestyles, life on different coasts, commitment issues, and problems that arise with work. What started as something purely physical soon begins to feel like more, but making it work won’t be easy.
I’m typically more of a slow burn kinda girl, but I like a high heat read every once in awhile to change things up. After reading the first book in this series, I knew that Mann could deliver on that. And boy does she! This wastes zero time before getting HOT and it stays that way the whole way through. As with The Lawyer (not required reading), these two hit the sheets within minutes of meeting, and they connect with their bodies before ever involving their hearts. The romance lover in me wanted more of an emotional connection early on, but it’s easy to see that Jenner is fighting his feelings every step of the way. Jo does a few things that really show her age (22), and I liked that Jenner didn’t immediately go back to his old lifestyle. There’s no real OW drama, no playboy antics – you can tell Jenner is smitten from the start, it just takes him some time to open his heart. I loved some of the surprises towards the end, and probably would’ve loved this as a whole if the characters had been more relatable. Still a solid, STEAMY read, and I’ll definitely be back for more from Mann. I received an early copy and am voluntarily leaving a review of this fling to more romance.
