It’s the time when I ponder my top reads of the year, and that makes me nostalgic about books that have made the list in the past. One such love story is the Wicked Ways duet, my first experience with K. Bromberg’s writing. Her books made my list in 2019, 2020, AND 2021, so I continue to be grateful for this duet for starting things off right. It’s also a fantastic read on its own, with electric sexual tension and a storyline that’s completely unexpected. In the three years since the duet’s release, I have not read anything that felt similar – and that’s a major accomplishment. So it seemed like the perfect time to share my reviews again!

RESIST REVIEW ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
Complex and captivating, Resist draws you into a storyline that is anything but typical. Normally, I’m not someone who would enjoy a book featuring a madam of a escort service and a client of her service – it’s truly a testament to how outstanding K. Bromberg’s writing is that I loved this book. The story follows Vaughn, a normal woman who has found herself in a totally abnormal profession – she needs to pay off the mountain of bills she’s acquired taking care of her family, so she’s running a business that will help her expedite the process. When one of her girls is injured on the job, she finds herself stepping in with an important new client. Ryker, a successful divorce attorney, has been burned by women too many times (and sees the wreckage they leave in the wake every day at work), so he’s enlisted the services of an escort. Ryker finds himself drawn to the strong and fiery Vaughn in a way that he never expected, but she resists his advances at every turn.
The push-pull relationship between Ryker and Vaughn takes center stage here, and the story just pulls you in. Vaughn has become jaded by powerful men, so Ryker’s money and power don’t impress her, and Ryker’s skills as a lawyer mean that he knows how to wear down her defenses. This book wouldn’t work if both characters were not truly likeable, and that is definitely the case here. Neither one is perfect, but they are extremely relatable, and as we begin to understand their motivations better, it becomes difficult not to root for them. Please be aware that this is in no way a light or easy read (and there are plenty of triggers relating to sensitive subjects), but it’s an engrossing story that’s hard to put down. And yes, it does end in a cliffhanger, so be sure to read in order.

Absolute PERFECTION. If I’ve ever read a more satisfying conclusion to a series, I’m not sure what it is. From the very beginning, this couple’s story drew me in completely. I never would’ve expected to love a book about a madam and one of her clients, but that’s exactly what happened during the first book in this duet, and I was devastated by the turn of events at the end (in addition to the wait I would have to endure before reading the conclusion). This certainly did not disappoint; it is just as much about Ryker and Vaughn’s deepening feelings for each other as it is about the suspense, which makes the pages fly by. Bromberg’s exquisite writing makes this unlikely couple one of my all-time favorites, and will put her future books at the top of my to be read list.
Please, please, please do not read this book without having read Resist first. This is 100% a duet, as the story picks up right where that one left off. You will miss out on so much by reading them out of order, and anyone who has read the first needs no explanation as to the plot of this book. You will not be disappointed if you take a chance on this unusual couple – Ryker is 100% alpha who will do anything to keep Vaughn happy and healthy, while Vaughn is a fiery but relatable heroine who brings Ryker to his knees.
