⭐️⭐️⭐️ AUDIOBOOK REVIEW: Off the Map by Trish Doller 🎧

After loving Float Plan and enjoying The Suite Spot, I went into this with a certain set of expectations… and it took less than two chapters to shatter them to pieces, lol. It’s not that the story was “bad,” but a major part of the charm of the first two books in the series is the heartfelt slow burn and emotional build. This couple begins banging within a few pages, and it was just total whiplash for me. Try as I might, I couldn’t seem to get into the story after that, and I wasn’t the biggest fan of either character or their instalove. We don’t know a whole lot about Eamon, and Carla was not the most relatable character. Having them go off adventuring while completely ignoring their responsibilities for the wedding was not particularly endearing, and the book never recovered from its early woes for me.

The story follows Carla, a woman who loves to see new places and try new things. She’s currently traveling to a wedding, and one of the other guests was supposed to help her get there. But Carla and Eamon have an instant connection, and it’s not long before they’re changing their plans. What starts as a fling and some fun adventures soon turns into something more.

What I loved about Float Plan is the unique feel, the emotional journey, and the vivid travel descriptions. This does have all of those things, it just did them a little differently. There’s a complete tonal shift and a lot more spice in this one, which felt jarring in an established series. It’s not what I read Doller’s books for, and it’s not what I wanted. Unfortunately, I had disconnected completely by the halfway point, and found myself doing a lot of skimming. When a book is this short and I’m skimming… it’s not a great sign. That said, I think there’s definitely an audience for it. This is actually one instance where it might be better NOT to have read the other books in the series first. That way you can go in without the same set of expectations. Ultimately, it was a disappointing read for me.

Audio Note:

The audio is good – the story is told from Carla’s POV, so we get a single narrator. I’m not familiar with this narrator, but she does a good job. Her voice felt right for the story, and it was easy to listen to. Relaxing. The runtime is also short enough that it’s easy to finish in a single day. Unlike the other books in the series, I wouldn’t be able to recommend this as a workday listen. The spice is not overly descriptive, but it’s more detailed than the first two books and it happens immediately. No major complaints about the audio, it’s well done.

Blurb:

Trish Doller’s idyllic romance Off the Map proves sometimes a wrong turn can lead to the exact right destination.

On the road to love, you don’t need a GPS…

Carla Black’s life motto is “here for a good time, not for a long time.” She’s been traveling the world on her own in her vintage Jeep Wrangler for nearly a decade, stopping only long enough to replenish her adventure fund. She doesn’t do love and she doesn’t ever go home.

Eamon Sullivan is a modern-day cartographer who creates digital maps. His work helps people find their way, but he’s the one who’s lost his sense of direction. He’s unhappy at work, recently dumped, and his one big dream is stalled out—literally.

Fate throws them together when Carla arrives in Dublin for her best friend’s wedding and Eamon is tasked with picking her up from the airport. But what should be a simple drive across Ireland quickly becomes complicated with chemistry-filled detours, unexpected feelings, and a chance at love – if only they choose it.

Much like Anna, Keane is struggling with a very different future than the one he had planned. As romance rises with the tide, they discover that it’s never too late to chart a new course.
