MINI AUDIOBOOK REVIEW: Sleet Sugar by S.J. Tilly

It’s a mini review! I’m clearing out my review queue of all the books I can’t seem to convince myself to finish, for one reason or another. That doesn’t mean these are negative reviews, it simply means that something isn’t compelling me to keep reading at the moment. Maybe I’ll go back to them another day, maybe I won’t!

DNF Details:

How far did I get? About 150 pages in, close to halfway through.

Why did I stop? I’m going to blame this one on the narrator and the reluctant heroine. Interestingly enough, I really liked the female narrator (Aubrey Vincent) when I listened to Sleet Kitten, but her voice grated on my nerves this time. Just like… so over the top bubbly. Pair that with a heroine who refuses to even consider dating a guy she’s already spent a great night with and who genuinely seems interested, and I was struggling with this particular installment. Tilly’s writing has grown a lot in the time since this was released, and that was obvious. None of it was working for me, so I decided to move on.

Was I enjoying it initially? I’d like to say yes, since I adore Tilly’s more recent writing, but… no. I instantly kinda hated the premise of friends telling a heroine she needs to get laid, followed by an immediate surface level hookup and then a refusal to give the guy a chance. I did like the hero and how ready he was to dive in, but I didn’t like the heroine at all. Tilly’s writing is immensely bingeable though, and I bet I’d have a better experience reading the kindle version.

Would I finish this? I’d let some time pass and then read the kindle version instead of listening to the audio, but the foundational issues would still be there. Instead, I’m planning on just jumping ahead to Sleet Princess, since that will be Tilly’s most recent work and I’m betting the quality difference will be significant.

Who would I recommend this to? Fans of lighthearted hockey romance with a black cat/golden retriever kinda dynamic. Anyone who enjoys a fling to more romance where it starts out sexy before switching to a slow burn.

Blurb:

My friends have convinced me. No more hockey players.

With a dad who is the Head Coach for the Minnesota Sleet, it seemed like an easy decision. My friends have also convinced me that the best way to boost my fragile self-esteem is through a one-night stand.

A dating app. A hotel bar. A sexy-as-hell man… who’s sweet, and funny, and – did I mention? sexy-as-hell… I fortified my courage and invited myself up to his room.

Assumptions. There’s a rule about them.

I assumed he was passing through town. I assumed he was a businessman, or maybe an investor, or accountant, or literally anything other than a professional hockey player. I assumed I’d never see him again.

I assumed wrong.

Easy to read as standalones, but the friend group is fun. The author had several massively successful books after starting this series, so the first couple of books are actually her oldest work and the fourth book is her newest. I expect a large quality difference between books, though book one was pretty solid overall.

Blurb:

There are a few things that life doesn’t prepare you for. Like what to do when a super-hot guy catches you sneaking around in his basement. Or what to do when a mysterious package shows up with tickets to a hockey game because, apparently, he’s a professional athlete. Or how to handle it when you get to the game and realize he’s freaking famous since half of the 20,000 people in the stands are wearing his jersey.

I thought I was a well-adjusted adult, reasonably prepared for life. But one date with Jackson Wilder, a viral video, and a “I didn’t know she was your mom” incident, and I’m suddenly questioning everything I thought I knew.

But he’s fun. And great. And I think I might be falling for him.

But I don’t know if he’s falling for me, too, or if he’s as much of a player off the ice as on.

About the Author:

Like all her books, S.J. Tilly resides in the glorious state of Minnesota, where she was born and raised. To avoid the freezing cold winters, S.J. enjoys burying her head in books, whether to read them or write them or listen to them.

When she’s not busy writing her contemporary smut, she can be found lounging with her husband and their herd of rescue boxers. And when the weather permits she loves putting her compost to use in the garden, pretending to know what she’s doing. The neighbors may not like the flowery mayhem of her yard, but the bees sure do. And really, that’s more important.
