MINI REVIEW: The Fastball by Megan Cousins

It’s a mini review! I’m clearing out my review queue of all the books I can’t seem to convince myself to finish, for one reason or another. That doesn’t mean these are negative reviews, it simply means that something isn’t compelling me to keep reading at the moment. Maybe I’ll go back to them another day, maybe I won’t!

DNF Details:

How far did I get? Almost 200 pages in, over halfway through.

Why did I stop? I’m going to be honest… I forgot I was reading it. Oops. I was genuinely enjoying it at about a 4-star level, but one of my anticipated releases came out and I set it down “for a few days.” That was like two months ago, lol. I didn’t take notes as I was reading, so I’d probably have to start over again, and I’m not going to do that.

Was I enjoying it initially? Yeah, I was. I love pen pal romances and I also love strangers to lovers, so this was a great combination of both. It tackles some heavier subjects while keeping the overall tone lightish, and I liked that it felt unique. Maybe a little more understated than my usual, which is why I was leaning towards 4 stars at the time. But I’d definitely try another book from the author.

Would I finish this? I was planning to. I fully intended to do so. Now that it’s been so long, probably not. Also not a great sign that I forgot about its existence, but there are a lot of good books out there, so it’s not that surprising.

Who would I recommend this to? It’s got Chloe Liese vibes, maybe just a little more reserved than that. And it’s closed door, so readers who enjoy that as well. The pen pal component is interesting, and it’s also got a military aspect. So I’d say small town lovers who like lighter romances that still get emotional.

Blurb:

Amanda:
I hate flying. In fact, it terrifies me. But the cute stranger seated next to me on my first flight in five years helps calm my nerves and put me at ease. When I find out that he flips houses, it doesn’t take much convincing to ask if he’ll help me with the house I just inherited from my grandpa. It’s not easy for me to put my heart on the line, and I don’t know if I can take that plunge.

Again.

James:
There’s nothing quite like breaking through the clouds into bright blue sky, but my seat mate might disagree with me on that. She’s terrified. And I’m not going to let her go through this experience alone. When she asks if I can help with her house, of course I say yes. I’m intrigued and want to get to know her more. But when our shared past comes calling, I don’t know if I can risk my heart.

Please be aware that The Fastball includes brief, on-page depictions of PTSD/flashbacks as a result of James’ military service, and subsequent discussions of mental health. Therapy sessions are also depicted on-page. The Fastball also includes chronic illness representation in the form of food sensitivity and digestive disorders. This is a closed door, pen-pals to friends to lovers romance, with elements of found family and forced proximity. This is the third book in the Wild Pitches series, but can be read as a standalone.
