WEEKLY WRAP-UP: March 22nd

It was a pretty good week! I read a little bit of everything, and I ended up with two 5-star reads. Sounds good to me!

While I was trying to get out of a book hangover, I stumbled upon Dust Storm, by new-to-me author Maggie Gates. It was so easy to binge, and the fish out of water/opposites attract vibes pulled me right in. Just the kind of sexy, bingeable read I needed.

I received an early listening copy of The Rom-Commers this week, and I’d heard such good things about the book that I dove right in. It’s genuinely fun and playful, but there’s an undercurrent of angst and heartache. It’s a complex read, and I can definitely see why so many early readers are loving it. The audio was great too! It doesn’t come out until June, so be sure to add this one to your TBR.

I also listened to Happily Never After, which was awesome on audio. Such a quick, fun read. I loved the unique premise, but the romance was lackluster for me. Strong start, weak finish.

Finally, I ended up DNFing Pretty Rings & Broken Things. The tropes are right up my alley, but I found it difficult to stay invested in the story. Just very “meh.” I do think this author has a lot of potential, so I will continue to check out her books as she grows.

I’ve got ARCs for a few of the books that are releasing next week, and I can tell you that they’re pretty strong! We’ll see what else I end up reading in the meantime.

If you read my Teaser Thursday post (found here), you know that there are some exciting books on the way soon! I’ll have reviews going up throughout the week.

If you missed any of this week’s reviews, I’ve got the blurb and rating for each below. There’s also a link to my new release list.

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ Opposites attract fun

—Christian—

Rule Number 1: You ride in my truck; you let me open the door.

Another problem was the last thing I needed. Unfortunately, Cassandra Parker was mine.

But the biggest problem of all?

It wasn’t the beautiful stranger sticking her nose in my operations.

It wasn’t the bulldozer she was driving over my way of life.

And it definitely wasn’t the fact that she was living in my house.

My biggest problem? The engagement ring on her finger.

—Cassandra—

Rule Number 1: If you’re going to kill someone, make it look like an accident, cry at the funeral, admit to nothing, and deny everything.

To be clear, I didn’t want to be Christian Griffith’s problem. But there I was: exiled from New York, stranded on a cattle ranch, and desperate to salvage what was left of my career.

Living with a single dad and his children was a downgrade from my high-rise office and city comforts, but I agreed to it for one simple reason: to save my job.

A hot cowboy wasn’t going to lasso me into staying a second longer than necessary.

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ Sneak peek audiobook review 🎧

She’s rewriting his love story. But can she rewrite her own?

Emma Wheeler desperately longs to be a screenwriter. She’s spent her life studying, obsessing over, and writing romantic comedies—good ones! That win contests! But she’s also been the sole caretaker for her kind-hearted dad, who needs full-time care. Now, when she gets a chance to re-write a script for famous screenwriter Charlie Yates—The Charlie Yates! Her personal writing god!—it’s a break too big to pass up.

Emma’s younger sister steps in for caretaking duties, and Emma moves to L.A. for six weeks for the writing gig of a lifetime. But what is it they say? Don’t meet your heroes? Charlie Yates doesn’t want to write with anyone—much less “a failed, nobody screenwriter.” Worse, the romantic comedy he’s written is so terrible it might actually bring on the apocalypse. Plus! He doesn’t even care about the script—it’s just a means to get a different one green-lit. Oh, and he thinks love is an emotional Ponzi scheme.

But Emma’s not going down without a fight. She will stand up for herself, and for rom-coms, and for love itself. She will convince him that love stories matter—even if she has to kiss him senseless to do it. But . . . what if that kiss is accidentally amazing? What if real life turns out to be so much . . . more real than fiction? What if the love story they’re writing breaks all Emma’s rules—and comes true?

⭐️⭐️⭐️ Strong start, weak finish 🎧

Their name? The objectors.
Their job? To break off weddings as hired.
Their dilemma? They might just be in love with each other.

When Sophie Steinbeck finds out just before her nuptials that her fiancé has cheated yet again, she desperately wants to call it off. But because her future father-in-law is her dad’s cutthroat boss, she doesn’t want to be the one to do it. Her savior comes in the form of a professional objector, whose purpose is to show up at weddings and proclaim the words no couple (usually) wants to hear at their ceremony: “I object!”

During anti-wedding festivities that night, Sophie learns more about Max the Objector’s job. It makes perfect sense to her: he saves people from wasting their lives, from hurting each other. He’s a modern-day hero. And Sophie wants in.

The two love cynics start working together, going from wedding to wedding, and Sophie’s having more fun than she’s had in ages. She looks forward to every nerve-racking ceremony saving the lovesick souls of the betrothed masses. As Sophie and Max spend more time together, however, they realize that their physical chemistry is off the charts, leading them to dabble in a little hookup session or two—but it’s totally fine, because they definitely do not have feelings for each other. Love doesn’t exist, after all.

And then everything changes. A groom-to-be hires Sophie to object, but his fiancée is the woman who broke Max’s heart. As Max wrestles with whether he can be a party to his ex’s getting hurt, Sophie grapples with the sudden realization that she may have fallen hard for her partner in crime.

Mini review

Pretty rings can’t always fix broken things.

Unfortunately, that doesn’t stop powerful men from trying. Which is why instead of getting the wedding I’d always dreamed of, I was forced to marry the heir to our rival company and join a family that we’ve hated for generations.

An arranged marriage to make our problem disappear.

Then again, I’m the one that snuck around behind my father’s back and ended up at the center of a scandal that could ruin my family’s reputation.

Now the only person who can protect me is the cold and calculated billionaire, Archer Moore.

The marriage was only supposed to be for show, but Archer can be very convincing. He’s demanded we move in together. That we kiss. That we make it look—and feel—real. He’s a man who is obsessed with getting what he wants—and I’m starting to think what he wants is me.

But the closer we get, and the less we pretend, the more I question if the grudges between our families are too much to overcome for a marriage that was built on pretty rings and broken things.

Pretty Rings and Broken Things is a billionaire, arranged marriage romance. It is Winnie’s book and a complete standalone.
