MINI AUDIOBOOK REVIEW: Falling for Gage by Mia Sheridan

It’s a mini review! I’m clearing out my review queue of all the books I can’t seem to convince myself to finish, for one reason or another. That doesn’t mean these are negative reviews, it simply means that something isn’t compelling me to keep reading at the moment. Maybe I’ll go back to them another day, maybe I won’t!

DNF Details:

How far did I get? A few hours into the audiobook, though it felt like forever. Then I looked at some other reviews and realized I had zero interest in continuing.

Why did I stop? I wasn’t enjoying it – at all. The dynamic between our couple felt off to me, sort of instant enemies but then also instalove? I could tell something was off right away, but when they had a one night stand that was supposed to be chemistry-filled and I felt absolutely nothing, I knew things really weren’t going well. I checked some reviews online to see if things got better, and apparently most of the book focuses on them (SPOILER) believing that they might be half siblings and still lusting after each other anyways. Which… yeah, that definitely wasn’t going to make this a better read for me, lol. It’s an interesting concept if I was feeling the chemistry from the start, but that was not the case at all.

Was I enjoying it initially? Not at all, no. I’ve heard such great things about Mia Sheridan’s work, but most (all?) of her romance books released before I got back into reading, so this is the first true new release I’ve seen from her. From what I’ve gathered, this isn’t her best work, so I’d probably be better off trying Archer’s Voice first, which is the book that made her so famous. There were aspects of her writing that really worked for me, so it might just be a case of trying the wrong book first, who knows. But I definitely wasn’t feeling this one.

Would I finish this? I think I’d try a different book by this new-to-me author first and see if that goes any better for me. I wouldn’t rule out giving this another go, but I don’t have high hopes for it either.

Who would I recommend this to? Fans of the author who have been following the series from the start. You can certainly read this as a standalone, but having the context of the others might make you more invested in the characters.

Audio Note:

The audio was very solid! Both Maeve York and Benjamin Sands are new-to-me narrators, but they give great performances. The vibe is laidback and a little soothing, which went with the tone of the story. The runtime (nearly 12 hours) means that it might take a couple of days to get through, but it’s not overly long. This is a fling to more romance, so the spice kicks in early on, but it wasn’t particularly hot or steamy. Probably not a good choice to listen to at the office, but otherwise good in the format. It’s a great way to experience the story.

Blurb:

From New York Times and USA Today bestselling author Mia Sheridan comes her next novel in the Pelion Lake series.

How is it possible that perfect Gage Buchanan is still single after all these years?

He can’t quite figure it out himself. Perhaps he hasn’t met the right woman. Maybe he’s spent too many years focusing on work—or maybe he just isn’t as perfect as everyone thinks he is.

Gage thought he left his days of one-night stands behind him, however something about the gorgeous cocktail waitress in a town three hours away is far too intriguing. But when she shows up weeks later in his hometown, Calliope, pretending to be an art appraiser, Gage is completely blindsided—not to mention still very attracted to the (apparent) little liar. He can’t figure her out: not her angle nor the persistent pull between them.

Aurora “Rory” Casteel is determined to find her father. All she knows from her late mother is that he lives in Calliope and he’s an important part of the town. So when Rory’s gallery-owning friend offers to run cover for her while she sleuths around town, she jumps at the chance. But she doesn’t anticipate the man she spent one wild night with turning out to be a local.

Sure, it puts a wrinkle in Rory’s plan, but she can work around Gage Buchanan. Even as it gets harder to pretend her heart doesn’t flip every time he’s in the room. She has a suspicion he isn’t everything he seems, either, but maybe it’s “perfect” Gage’s flaws that are what she’s really drawn to.
