This is one of those books that gets better in the second half, because I really wasn’t loving it at the start. Our hero falls in love at first sight, and it was just… a lot. Then we find out that the heroine is “engaged” (a lie she made up years ago), and the hero doesn’t know what to do. Once everything was out in the open, this got a lot more playful and I was enjoying the banter. Still not one of my favorites from the author, but it makes a solid addition to this light and sexy series. You don’t HAVE to read the series in order for it to make sense, but Mama’s Boy does a lot of the heavy lifting in terms of explaining the premise. It was great revisiting this funny family, and I’m looking forward to watching the last man fall.
The story follows Griff, a man who is too smart for his own good. He’s a tattooed scientist – an intelligent man who looks like a bad boy. He’s never quite figured out how to talk to women, so he comes off as a bit of a neanderthal. When Griff meets Kinsey, it’s love at first sight – he falls for her brain as well as her looks, and now he’s got to convince her to feel the same way. The only problem? Griff believes Kinsey is engaged, and telling him the truth would jeopardize Kinsey’s career. As part of a family bet, Kinsey agrees to go on six dates with Griff, and he’s hoping it will help him to fall OUT of love with her. Because falling for an engaged woman is out of the question.
The “family bet” storyline is kinda complicated, so I’m not going to go into the whole thing here. Just know that it plays a role in the series. This is another low angst, sexy installment and I loved the chemistry between these two. Griff makes a great hero, and I liked the unique storyline. There was just a lot going on, and the instalove was too much for me. Pair that with a “forbidden” romance, and the beginning was pretty off-putting. This managed to win me over by the end, but my rating would probably be lower if grading this as a standalone romance. The series as a whole is what has me hooked, and I’m curious how the final book will play out. I do suggest reading in order, since the books are better together. I received an early copy and am voluntarily leaving a review of this rom com.
