Started as a 5, shifted into a 4, then fizzled to a 3 – I liked a lot of this, but the push/pull overshadowed the actual romance after awhile. The good news? It’s the kind of book that makes me want to read more from this new-to-me author, because I enjoyed the writing style and the potential in the story. Fans of forbidden, light but tension-filled new adult romance will likely enjoy this bodyguard romance the most. I loved the concept of a young Secret Service agent falling for the president’s daughter, who can’t seem to stop herself from pushing his buttons. The first part of the book had me excited about the dynamic between the characters, and I liked both of them individually. Somewhere along the way, this heroine started showing her age, and her pushiness became less endearing and more frustrating – so did the hero’s reluctance. That ended up taking the lead over softer moments of connection, which I needed more of to seal the deal.
The story follows Ethan (23), a Secret Service agent who is just getting started in his career. When he’s assigned as the lead agent protecting the president’s daughter, it should be an honor. But something about Georgie (18) lit a fire in Ethan the moment they met. And spending every day with the fiery, beautiful woman does nothing to extinguish those feelings – they only grow stronger the more Ethan gets to know Georgie. He’d jeopardize his career by giving in to the tension that crackles between them, and Ethan has devoted way too much time to the service for that to happen.
I’ve heard good things about Farnsworth’s writing, but I’ll admit to being a little hesitant about reading a book set in the political world. Not exactly something I want to read about to escape current events, lol. But the book isn’t set in DC for the most part, and very little of the plot actually deals with those aspects, beyond Georgie’s frustration about being unable to live a normal life. Both characters are young, but they were actually the perfect age for the situation – Georgie is attending college, and it’s better to have an agent who can blend in. I also liked that she was bold and interesting, constantly pushing Ethan’s buttons. But there is also a fine line where that behavior becomes too much, and that was this book’s downfall for me. I love a slow burn, but that typically comes with little swoony moments along the way. Quieter, softer situations that build the emotional connection. This was much more focused on the tension and push/pull; less about the ways they are right together, and more about simply wanting Ethan to give in. Ultimately, there was nothing major holding me back from enjoying this, but not enough good stuff to keep me hooked either.
