MINI REVIEW: That First Flight by Jenn McMahon

It’s a mini review! I’m clearing out my review queue of all the books I can’t seem to convince myself to finish, for one reason or another. That doesn’t mean these are negative reviews, it simply means that something isn’t compelling me to keep reading at the moment. Maybe I’ll go back to them another day, maybe I won’t!

DNF Details:

How far did I get? A third of the way through this 400+ page book.

Why did I stop? Entirely possible that I’ll come back to it when I’m looking for something soft and easy, the speed of this relationship just felt ridiculous to me. I wanted more from the flight (if it’s in the title, make it major), but I really liked the vibes. This billionaire is smitten right away, to the extent that he’s willing to let someone who is basically a stranger move into his home with her daughter, so that she can start a new career. Sweet, but wildly implausible – especially since she agrees to let her daughter move into some random man’s home (!!!). I’d find it more palatable if the flight interaction had substantial, but it was not. So I was both really enjoying this and also scratching my head a bit. When I was done reading for the day, I set it down and moved onto something with more bite, but I definitely wouldn’t rule out going back to it at some point.

Was I enjoying it initially? Yeah, definitely. This is a new-to-me author, but I’ve heard good things and the premise sounded great. I love strangers to lovers romances and interesting meet cutes, and this is that. I did want more from the flight meet cute, I love those – and this one was kinda lame. But the vibes were light and the writing was easy to binge, so it had a lot working for it. It was almost too light and easy, which is something I might be in the mood for on a different day. Also, now that I know about the ridiculousness of the roommate situation, I’ll probably find it easier to digest on a second reading attempt.

Would I finish this? I would. Not right away, I think I’ll set it aside for a while and go in fresh with recalibrated expectations. But I certainly don’t mind a softer read on occasion, and there were no major roadblocks to my enjoyment.

Who would I recommend this to? Fans of easygoing billionaire and single mom romances who don’t mind an implausible situation.

Blurb:

Something tells me that nothing I do can stop myself from falling for my roommate.

I’ve always wanted to be a chef.

But the same day two pink lines showed up on the test, was the day I gave up chasing my own dreams to put my daughter first.

I didn’t expect that to lead to a life of being scrutinized by my parents for every single move I made.

After years of it, I was done.

I caught the first flight to New York. I was already filled with nerves before we even took off until a stranger with an infectious smile, heartbreaker blue eyes and a personality that can light up anyone’s life, took the seat next to me.

Months later, the same man shows up at my bar in a small town in the mountains. This time he’s eager to learn more about me.

I thought telling him I have a daughter would make him run back home, except now I find myself as his new roommate in the city.

I told myself I wasn’t going to get involved with him.
I told myself that I’m here to live out my dream of being a chef.
But somewhere along the way, he stole my heart.
And if I had to take a guess… It was back when we took that first flight.
